When I traveled through the game reserves to find the old Ikoma settlement sites, I heard stories of how these elders moved from Robanda to open up new settlements in Mugumu in their youth because of the famines. I was keenly aware that these respected elders knew this area because they had hunted here, presumably illegally, in their youth. These men who had shown me such kind hospitality and generosity were certainly not my image of the “poacher” so often demonized in the popular press. The tragedy of the colonial years is, at least in part, a result of these fundamentally different ways of seeing and using the landscape. The resulting dynamics of resistance were to play a fundamental role in the next historical period with the establishment of Serengeti National Park.
